Historical Highlights of Floyd Chapel Baptist Church
Floyd Chapel was first built in the year of 1880. In the early years
the history was not recorded.
In the late 1920's the church was a wood framed church with steep plank
steps facing the east. There were oil lamps hanging on each side of the
wall, a coal heater and the floors were not carpeted. The bathroom
facilities were located outside. At this time the Pastor was Reverend
Sanders. The other ministerial staff was Reverend Collins and Reverend
Brown. The deacons at this time were Deacon Charlie Knight, Deacon Len
Minter, Deacon Darton, Deacon Dock Pittman, Deacon Will Walker, Deacon Jim
Murry, Deacon Hank Williams and Deacon John Gordon.
In 1949, under the leadership of Reverend R. B. Thomas a new church was
built. The old wood frame building was torn down and the church was erected
with the existing blocks. This structure was turned to face First Street.
Carpet was installed and the benches were made of wood. These benches were
also used as Dinner tables when dinner was served.
Floyd Chapel has been blessed with the leadership of several different
Pastors and great things happened under the leadership of most.
In 1990 our present Pastor, Reverend Edward C. Cochran was installed as
leader of this flock. The active deacons during this time were Deacon George
Franks, Deacon Harold Franks, and Deacon Jacob Edmond. There were
approximate 12 active members. Under the guidance of Pastor Cochran, many
new and exciting changes have been implemented.
Since 1990, our membership has grown from 12 active members to over 200
active members. Pastor Cochran was the only minister in 1990. Our
ministerial staff has grown to include 11 Associates. Pastor Cochran and
Floyd Chapel Baptist Church as licensed 9 ministers and ordained 1. Twelve
deacons have been ordained under this leadership.
In or around May of 1996, ground was broken on our new fellowship hall. In
1997, our new fellowship hall was completed and later named "Floyd Chapel
Baptist Church Memorial Hall" in honor of our deceased members who departed
this life prior to the completion of this dream.
On January 26, 19997, new established departments were implemented; they are
the Men's Department; Women's Department, Youth Department, Music
Department, Evangelistic Outreach and Drug and Alcohol Ministry.
We purchased the vacant house and land located at 106 First Street in June
of 1998. The small blue wood house that occupied this land was torn down and
at this time the lot is vacant waiting on our physical growth.
In March of 1999, we purchased the land located at the corner of Berry
Street and First Street. We also purchased a 25 passenger bus in December of
1999.
In 2000, Pastor Cochran in obedience to God, established 4 new ministries:
Nurses Ministry, Media Ministry(Video), Youth Ministry and the Ministerial
Spouses Counsel. One Deacon was added to the Deacon Ministry (Deacon Malcolm
Jennings). We also was blessed with one new Minister, (Reverend Edward
Hunter).
The Youth Ministry have their own services on Thursday nights. Their service
at this time is called "Teen Expressions".
In May, 2001 Floyd Chapel published our firs ever cookbook called "Feeding
the Flock" with over 120 years of recipes and remembrances. We licensed one
new Minister, Jocelyn Poellnitz on Sunday, May 6, 2001 and in this same year
was blessed with the union of another, Minister Tony Hayes.
In January 2002, Floyd Chapel started our first Midweek services on
Wednesday nights starting at 7:30pm. This has allowed the associate
ministers to bring the word. In April, 2002, Floyd Chapel published our
first newsletter called "Spotlight News". The first issue was dedicated to
our beloved pastor and first lady. In May 2002, Floyd Chapel started our
first summer camp.
2002 was also the birth of our vision...God said, build my house.
We are growing, in every aspect of the word, both spiritually and
physically. God is truly blessing us here.
